Glossary of terms

The following are definitions of terms used within these web pages:

  • AAC – Australian Apprenticeship Centre providing information to employers on appropriate training packages available, training contracts and various incentives available to employers and trainees.

  • AQTF – Australian Quality Training Framework; a National Guideline of standards that a RTO must meet in order to maintain RTO status.

  • Competency (also competence) – the ability to perform tasks and duties to the standard expected in employment.

  • Contract of training (also called training agreement) – a legal agreement between an employer and an apprentice or trainee, which defines the rights and responsibilities of each party.

  • Module – (also called subject) a unit of education or training which can be completed on its own or as part of a course. Modules may also result in the attainment of one or more units of competency.

  • NYC – Not Yet Competent, result of assessment conducted and further re-assessment required.

  • RCC or recognition of current competencies – the acknowledgment of competencies currently held by a person, acquired through training, work or life experience. More commonly known as recognition of prior learning.

  • RPL or recognition of prior learning – the acknowledgment of a person's skills and knowledge acquired through previous training, work or life experience, which may be used to grant status or credit in a subject or module.

  • RTO – Registered Training Organisation an organisation registered by a state or territory recognition authority to deliver training and/or conduct assessments and issue nationally recognised qualifications in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework.

  • Skills Tasmania (previously known as OPCET: Office of Post Compulsory Education Training) – part of the Tasmanian Department of Education who register, amend and approve training contracts for Apprentices and Employers/host employers, register RTOs and act as administrator for implementation of Vocation Education & Training Tasmania Act.

  • Training Package – A nationally accredited training program consisting of an agreed list of competencies.

  • Training Plan/training program – a set of education and training activities designed to achieve a specific vocational outcome, e.g. a course, module (subject), on-the-job training, etc.

  • UOC unit of competency a component of a competency standard – A unit of competency is a statement of a key function or role in a particular job or occupation.

  • VET – Vocational and Educational Training National workplace competency based training.
