Fallen powerlines – Stay Away, Stay Alive

Important information

Storms, strong winds, falling trees and vehicle accidents can bring overhead powerlines crashing to the ground.

Fallen powerlines are dangerous and should not be touched or approached under any circumstances.

Always assume that wires are live and capable of killing people.

If you find powerlines on the ground

  • Keep people well clear
  • Phone Aurora Fault Centre on 13 2004 or emergency services on 000 for help immediately

Be aware that any object in contact with powerlines could be live. The area is more dangerous in wet conditions as water is an excellent conductor. And remember: any metallic objects, including fences, will be electrified if they touch or are even close to a live fallen powerline. Even a tree branch can be a potential conductor of electricity if it is in contact with a live wire.

When a vehicle collides with a power pole

  • Occupants should stay in the vehicle until help arrives if the powerline is in contact with the vehicle
  • No-one should touch or approach the vehicle
  • Phone emergency services immediately on 000 or Aurora on 13 2004

If powerlines are in contact with the car and the driver is inside

  • If the car can be driven, drive the car clear to a distance of at least 8 metres.
  • If the car cannot be moved remain in the car if there is no threat of fire.
  • If the car is likely to catch fire, open the door, jump clear, landing with both feet together, avoid touching the ground and car simultaneously and hop away to a distance or at least 8 meters.

Remember if you find powerlines on the ground call Aurora immediately on 13 2004.
