FAQs

Q. I thought Aurora Energy only supplied electricity?
A. The Aurora Energy brand is well known as the state government owned electricity supplier of all Tasmanian homes and businesses. Recently Aurora embarked on a new strategy of commercialising spare capacity of existing optic fibre assets, until now these fibres have been used solely for management of Tasmania's electricity network. In 2006 the State Government requested expressions of interest from Telecommunication Service providers regarding the management and operation of Tasmania's state owned fibre assets, these included fibre laid with the gas pipeline between Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart (TGN) and the Basslink fibre connection between Tasmania and Victoria. Aurora was the successful respondent and has recently activated services between Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie with services to Melbourne coming in the second quarter of 2009.

Q. What telecommunications services does Aurora provide?
A. Aurora Energy specialises in Carrier Grade wholesale telecommunications services, the following services are available from Aurora:

Managed Ethernet Access Services

  • Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint Managed Ethernet services from 10Mbps to 10 Gbps
  • Wholesale ISO Layer 2 switched transmission service
  • Coverage to all major centres in Tasmania (Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Devonport)
  • Interconnection to Melbourne (coming soon).

Backhaul Services

  • Wholesale SDH interstate services with capacity from DS3 up to STM16 through to Melbourne (coming soon)
  • Wholesale SDH intrastate services with capacity from DS3 up to STM64 (planned for the second half of 2009).

Co-location Services

  • Secure, robust Carrier Grade co-location services at Aurora Data Centre locations in Hobart and Cambridge
  • Launceston Data Centre (planned for 2009).

Q. Can I buy telecommunications services from Aurora?
A. Aurora does not provide retail telecommunication services to end users. Aurora Energy is a wholesale provider to Carriers, Internet Service Providers, Telecommunications Retailers and ICT Service Providers. Aurora is also an authorised Networking Tasmania II supplier of services to the Tasmanian Government and Education sector.

Q. What areas have Aurora fibre?
A. Aurora Energy has the second largest customer access network in Tasmania. Aurora's optic fibre back bone network connects the major population centres of Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart in Tasmania and an extension to the Melbourne CBD is coming soon. Aurora has an extensive customer access network in the greater Hobart area extending from Montrose to Cambridge and south to Kingston.

Q. I thought Aurora sold its telecommunications company
A. Aurora has recently sold its retail telecommunications company TasTel, TasTel was a reseller of retail telecommunications services delivered to consumers over third party infrastructure. This retail activity was not consistent with Aurora's new strategy of wholesaling infrastructure services therefore it was decided to divest Aurora interest in TasTel.
