Safety device wins two Australian Business Awards
Tasmania’s electrical safety invention WireAlert – marketed in Tasmania as CablePI – has been declared the winner of two national business awards.

The safety sensor, which detects potentially dangerous electrical faults causing shocks and fires, won the 2010 Australian Business Awards for Best Business Product and Product Innovation.

Mr Greg Mannion, CEO of Ezikey, the Aurora Energy subsidiary company that manufactures, distributes and markets the device, said the award was recognition of the device’s potential to improve household electrical safety around Australia and beyond.

“It is very pleasing that the value of this product is now being recognised beyond Tasmania, where it was distributed free of charge to more than 200,000 households last year,’’ Mr Mannion said.

“While awards are a great marketing boost, they are not nearly as important as the improvement in public safety the device brings to the community. “This has gone largely unnoticed beyond Tasmania since the rollout started here.

“Like the smoke alarm, seatbelt and bike helmet, we think this life-saving device is so important that everyone in Australia should have one.

“Up to the end of last month in Tasmania, these devices have already detected 101 potential electric shock conditions, 620 potential fires and 1168 other electrical safety issues in homes.

“This puts Tasmania’s low voltage electrical distribution system well on track to becoming the safest in the country.’’

WireAlert won a Best Business Product award from a field of 93 entries and the Product Innovation category had a field of 86 entries.

The Best Business Product award “recognises products or services that significantly improve business processes, increase individual productivity or overall organisational efficiency.” The Product Innovation award “recognises the introduction of a new idea, method, technology, process or application of benefit and/or commercial significance in the marketplace.’’

Products are scored against a range of judging criteria including leadership, technology, research and development, performance, cost-effectiveness, sustainability and visual appeal.
