Aurora refers phone scam to Tasmania Police Aurora Energy has advised Tasmania Police of a telephone scam whereby callers purporting to be from the company are phoning customers threatening to disconnect power unless they provide credit card details.
Aurora General Manager Retail Paul Bloomfield said there were no circumstances under which representatives of the company would phone customers requesting bank account details.
“The only circumstance in which bank account details are taken over the phone is when the customer initiates contact with the company to establish direct debit arrangements,’’ Mr Bloomfield said.
“Customers who receive telephone calls of this nature should not disclose any personal information and should report the call to Tasmania Police.
“A number of customers have reported recently that they had received telephone calls from bogus representatives of Aurora Energy, claiming their electricity accounts were in debit and requesting credit card details to direct debit funds in order to avoid disconnection of their power.
“Some of our customers have been very distressed by these calls and we are concerned that elderly and other vulnerable Tasmanians may be targeted in this scam.’’
