Thursday, 8 April 2010Public appeal over continued theft of electricity assets Aurora Energy urges members of the public to report suspicious activity around power poles, with more than 100 cases of wire theft now reported over the past week.
System Operations Group Manager Malcolm Conway said public assistance was vital to catching the perpetrator or perpetrators in order to avoid a tragedy occurring.
“Those involved are placing themselves in mortal danger and their actions also pose an electrical safety risk for people in their own homes,’’ Mr Conway said.
“We are now aware of more than 100 cases of theft in the past week around the south-east of the State and in some cases the thief has returned to steal assets that have been recently replaced.
“Our crews have worked through Easter making repairs so that power interruptions are minimised. These repairs are vital to ensure householders are safe in their own homes.’’
Mr Conway said that Aurora was unable to provide greater detail on the thefts in the interests of community safety and to discourage copycat activity.
Thefts have been reported in the following areas: Bridgewater, Orielton, Sorell, Richmond, Tea Tree, Carlton River, Dodges Ferry, Lewisham, Colebrook, Sandford, South Arm, Cremorne, Lauderdale and Clifton Beach.
Members of the public are asked to:
· report any suspicious activity around power poles to Tasmania Police; · keep well clear of power poles with dangling or protruding wires; and · report any tingling from taps or other metal appliances in their homes immediately to Aurora Energy on 132 004.
