Reading Your Own Meter

Knowing how to read your meters can help you to keep track of your electricity consumption and even give you an idea of what your next power bill is likely to be.

By reading your meters at the beginning and end, you can work out just how many units of energy, or kilowatt hours, you have used in any one period of time.

How do I read my dial meter?

By reading each of the five dials in turn, left to right (ignore the dial underneath), you will build up a figure that represents the current reading. Choose the smaller figure if the hand sits between two numbers. This example reads 04508, which is 4508 units.

How do I read my digital meter?

The digital is simple to read you just have to read the number that appears on the display as below for each electricity tariff that is attached to that meter.

Taking another reading after some time will give a larger figure. Work out the difference, and that is your amount of usage for that period. Or you can compare your reading to the last one on your latest bill.

Predicting your next bill

Once you have mastered reading your own meters, it is easy to predict what your electricity charges would be at that point in time. These are the steps:

  1. Identify your meters. Know which meter is your general light and power and which one is your hot water (or hot water/HydroHeat) or OffPeak (if you have it). Make a note of the meter number if you wish (you will find this on your latest bill).
  2. Read each meter and write down the number.
  3. Log in to Aurora Online Services and go to the self meter reading section. Once there you can simply fill in the numbers in the appropriate sections and the calculator will automatically work out what your bill would be.

If you're not yet registered for online services, you can register now.

Access to meters

It is important that our meter readers can access your meter during normal business hours. If there is anything that prevents them from doing this, e.g. locks on gates or doors, building renovations, guard dogs etc. then you should contact us on 1300 13 2003.

If access to your meter is not possible then Aurora is entitled to bill you according to an estimate based on previous electricity usage.
