Fatal illness – the dangers of faulty wiring

Think about your house's electrical wiring

Most of us don't pay much attention to the electrical wiring in our homes. As long as it delivers the power that operates our lights, appliances and heaters we take it for granted.

However, as electrical wiring, switches and powerpoints begin to age problems can occur that may prove very dangerous or even fatal. Here's a rundown of some of the symptoms of serious wiring troubles. You'll notice that these are NOT do-it-yourself solutions. Please do not take chances with your family's safety – all work should be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor.

Problems that need a licensed electrical contractor

Dimming lights

You may find that your lights 'dim' slightly when a powerful appliance such as a heat pump or a refrigeration motor turns on. This in itself does not indicate a serious problem. However, if your lights are continually low or inconsistent it means that your wiring needs attention.

Discoloured, melted or cracked fittings

Damage to powerpoints or light fittings can indicate overheating of the household wiring system. Don't take any risks. Call a licensed electrical contractor.

Loud noise or sparking at light switches or powerpoints

While it is normal for switches or powerpoints to sometimes emit a tiny flash when you turn them off, be on the lookout for excessive noise or sparking. If this happens, call your licensed electrical contractor to investigate.

Continual blowing of fuses or circuit breakers

If you are constantly replacing the same fuse or repeatedly tripping a circuit breaker, there could be a serious problem with your wiring.

Appliances seem less efficient

If an oven, toaster, kettle or any other appliance seems to take longer to work than usual, it could signal a major problem.

Disturbances of earth wires

Earthing wires conduct any stray electrical current safely to the ground. If non-electrical trades people carry out work at your home, ensure that they do not disturb the earth conductors.
