How will my natural gas consumption be measured?
Your natural gas consumption will be calculated in joules which is the basic unit of energy used in the natural gas industry.
1 mega-joule (MJ) = 1 million joules.
1 giga-joule (GJ) = 1 000 mega-joules.
The meter on your property will measure the flow of natural gas from the main pipeline in the street into your business.
Your gas account will your natural gas consumption in MJs.

How much will natural gas cost me?
Effective 7th January 2008.
Aurora's tariff* for small business natural gas customers is 1.830^ cents ($0.01830 ) per megajoule, plus a daily charge of 71^ cents.
* Aurora may vary this tariff and additional charges at any time. Customers will be notified of such changes. This information is current as at January 2008. These prices include GST.
^This charge applies to commercial businesses using less than 1 000 GJs (or 1,000,000 MJs) of natural gas per annum. If your business uses more then 1 000 GJs of natural gas please contact us to discuss your pricing options.

How will natural gas compare to my current energy type?
Some common energy comparisons:
- 1 kWh of electricity is the equivalent to 3.6 MJ of natural gas.
- 1 kg wood is the equivalent to 16 MJ of natural gas.
- 1 litre LPG is the equivalent to 26 MJ of natural gas.
- 1 litre of diesel is the equivalent to 37 MJ of natural gas.
Please note that this is a guide only and will depend on the appliances that you choose. For example, natural gas appliances have an average efficiency rate of 80% compared to some electrical appliances (such as heat pumps) that can have an efficiency rate of 300%. That is, for every 1kWh of energy that is used, you will get the equivalent of 3kWh of energy.
