Excess solar energy in Tasmania is sent to the grid, earning you credits via the 8.935¢/kWh feed-in tariff, helping offset your power costs when production is low.
If your solar panels generate more electricity than you use, the excess energy is typically sent back to the grid. When this happens we pay you a feed-in tariff (FiT) for any excess energy you generate and send back to the grid.
Here’s how it works:
In Tasmania, like many other places, net metering is used. This means that when your solar system produces more electricity than you need, the excess electricity is sent to the grid, and as a result, you receive credits on your electricity bill.
The extra electricity you send is compensated at the feed-in tariff rate. For example, in Tasmania, the 2025/26 FiT rate is 8.935 cents per kWh.
These credits can help reduce the cost of the electricity you draw from the grid when your solar panels aren’t producing enough power, such as at night or during cloudy days.
This system ensures that none of your generated solar energy goes to waste and provides financial benefits for the excess energy you produce. A win-win for everyone.
