GRASSROOTS hockey continues to surge with children’s participation in Hookin2Hockey, doubling over the last 12 months thanks to a strategic partnership between Aurora Energy and Hockey Tasmania.

From debt to dignity: Long-term partnership offering energy efficient hope for Tasmanians living on low-incomes

Over the past year, the partnership has helped introduce hundreds of young Tasmanians to the sport of hockey, providing free Hookin2Hockey kits, training sessions, and support for clubs to grow their junior teams.

From 2024 to 2025, Hookin2Hockey participation rates have nearly doubled from 480 to 760 participants.

Aurora Energy CEO Nigel Clark said the initiative has made hockey more accessible to families across Tasmania.

"We are thrilled to see the impact of our support for Hookin2Hockey. Making the program free has removed barriers for many families and allowed children to experience the joy and benefits of playing sport," he said.

"Sport builds community, promotes health and well-being, and creates lifelong connections. We are proud to be Tasmania’s only 100 per cent owned and operated energy retailer and to support initiatives that make our state a better place to live."

Hockey Tasmania CEO Damian Smith said the partnership has strengthened the sport’s grassroots foundation.

"The support from Aurora Energy has been instrumental in growing our junior participation, across all regions of Tasmania. This is so important for the players and the entire community that supports them," he said.

"This partnership provides more opportunities for young Tasmanians to get involved in hockey and be inspired by local heroes like Olympians Eddie Ockenden, Josh Beltz, and Maddi Brooks.”

In addition to grass roots support, Aurora Energy’s support for hockey in Tasmania provides training for coaches, umpires and goalkeepers through dedicated coaching programmes free of charge.

Aurora Energy and Hockey Tasmania look forward to continuing their collaboration, nurturing the next generation of hockey players and building a stronger sporting community in Tasmania.
