Summer tips

Keep cool and carry on.

Summer in Tassie... while we don't get the blistering heat and hair-frizzing humidity of the North Island, those two weeks in February can still be costly energy wise if you're not careful.  Our top 5 summer tips will keep you, and your bills cool over the summer months.

Summer tips house

1. Open up and cool down

Open up your doors and windows to let the breeze through, no electricity needed.

2. Good old fashioned fans

Use a fan to circulate the air. Fans cost about 2 to 3 cents per hour to operate.

3. Turn your heat pump up to stay cool

Ok, it sounds like an oxymoron, but hear us out. Your heat pump has a summer setting and a winter setting. Summer is for cooling; winter is for heating. energy.gov.au recommends keeping your cooling between 25°C and 27°C when on the summer setting. Every degree cooler can add up to 10% to cooling costs.

4. Keep the sun out

If it's going to be a really hot day, close curtains and blinds on windows which get direct rays to keep radiant heat out. Go green and plant more plants and trees for natural shade!

5. Dry in the sun

Use the sun to dry your washing, save big on electricity and get the added benefit of those natural antibacterial rays!
